Welwitchia University Celebrates International Nurses Day with Free Public Health Testing at Post Street Mall
Windhoek, Namibia – [12 May 2025] – On 12 May 2025, Welwitchia University proudly joined the global community in celebrating International Nurses Day by hosting a free public health testing event at Post Street Mall, Walvis Bay. This special initiative was led by our dedicated student nurses and faculty staff from theFaculty of Health Sciences, School of Nursing, demonstrating the university’s strong commitment to community health and social responsibility.
International Nurses Day is observed annually on 12 May to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. It is a day dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions nurses make to healthcare systems and society at large. This year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” highlights the critical importance of investing in nursing professionals to build stronger, more resilient healthcare systems and healthier communities.
Nurses are often the frontline caregivers, providing essential support, clinical expertise, and compassionate care to patients across all healthcare settings. Welwitchia University acknowledges their vital role and celebrates their dedication through this meaningful community outreach.
During the event at Post Street Mall, our student nurses and faculty offered free blood pressure and glucose testing to members of the public. This service aimed to promote preventive health measures and raise awareness about common health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, which are significant public health concerns in Namibia.
The event not only provided valuable health services to the community but also gave our student nurses hands-on practical experience. Engaging directly with the public allows our future healthcare professionals to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, enhancing their skills and reinforcing their commitment to compassionate care.
Welwitchia University remains dedicated to producing skilled, compassionate healthcare professionals who are equipped to meet the health challenges of today and tomorrow. Through initiatives like this, the university strengthens its ties with the community and contributes to improving public health outcomes.
